What is An Emergency Tooth Extraction?
If you’ve recently fractured a tooth and have immediate severe pain or have been avoiding tooth pain for quite some time, you may need a same-day emergency tooth extraction. Broken or infected teeth require immediate attention because when there is infection in the mouth, it can travel to other areas in the human body. When infection from a tooth travels to the circulatory system, the bacteria can begin to colonize the heart valves and cause cardiac disease. Removing an infected or broken tooth can help prevent systemic disease and inflammation that could otherwise require hospitalization.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING EMERGENCY TOOTH REMOVAL?
When your tooth needs to be extracted, you will receive numbing gel followed by novocaine near the tooth that has to be removed. Prior to doing anything, our dentists make 100% sure that you are completely numb so as not to experience any pain. The procedure is usually quick and painless.
We employ sophisticated technology and techniques for “atraumatic” extractions which preserve healthy bone that remains. By doing so, you will have the option to have a dental implant placed in the future, should you decide to replace the missing tooth.
You will be given the option to preserve healthy bone and/or graft bone should you wish to have a dental implant placed later in time.
TYPES OF Emergency Tooth Extraction?
SIMPLE TOOTH EXTRACTION
This type of immediate tooth extraction is done using instruments that our dentists use to gently lift the tooth from its socket. It is the quickest way to remove a tooth and no stitches are required. Simple immediate tooth extractions usually are necessary when a tooth has had a root canal that has failed, a fractured tooth down to the gumline, or a tooth with so much damage or decay to the point that it is no longer restorable.
SURGICAL TOOTH EXTRACTION
This type of tooth extraction is more involved and potentially more complex. If your tooth has broken down below the gumline it becomes necessary to surgically expose the remaining tooth root so that it can be removed carefully and atraumatically.
Impacted tooth extraction
If your tooth has not fully erupted out of the gumline, the tooth is “impacted”. This means that there is a small amount of residual bone covering a portion of the tooth and it is unable to erupt into the mouth naturally. An incision is made over the unerupted tooth, exposing the crown or top part of the tooth, and then the tooth is gently removed with instruments.
WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL
For some people, wisdom teeth cause many problems. Over time the human head has evolved to be smaller and the amount of space available for wisdom teeth to grow may be insufficient to allow the tooth to erupt completely or at all. Sometimes, if the wisdom tooth is partially impacted and cannot fully erupt into the mouth, the gum tissue near the wisdom tooth can become incredibly painful, resulting in a condition called pericoronitis - inflammation of the gum tissue near the crown of the tooth. If pericoronitis is present you will need to be put on antibiotics before removing the wisdom tooth - this will prevent the infection from travelling down into the tooth socket should the tooth be extracted while infection is present. Wisdom teeth can be simple extractions or complex extractions, depending on how much (if any) of the tooth is exposed in the mouth.
will i have pain after an emergency tooth extraction?
Most of the time, there will be very little to no pain after a simple emergency tooth extraction, especially if you follow the post-op instructions carefully:
No smoking
Stay away from hot foods or liquids
Refrain from vigorous exercise for 24-48 hrs
Don’t swish with anything aggressively or drink through a straw for at least 24 hours
Apply ice if instructed to do so
If your tooth was infected, you can expect to have some minor discomfort after a simple or surgical tooth extraction. Taking antibiotics as directed and applying an ice pack to the area for 20 minutes on an off for 6-8 hours will help decrease the potential for swelling and pain.
Bleeding after an emergency tooth extraction
Minor bleeding after an emergency tooth extraction is normal; however, if bleeding persists for more than 30 minutes after the procedure there are a few things you can try before seeking medical attention:
Apply firm pressure to the area with a clean, sterile piece of gauze. Hold in place for a few minutes and then inspect to see if bleeding persists.
Soak a tea bag in water and gently apply it over the extraction site for 20 minutes. Bleeding should stop - if it does not, contact us so that we can reevaluate the extraction site. Avoid spitting or rinsing vigorously.
Healing after an emergency tooth extraction
The usual healing period for a tooth that was extracted normally takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. During the healing process, new gum tissue and bone grow into the extraction site, facilitating the ability to have an implant place in the near future.
