Dental Exams & Cleanings
Comprehensive oral exams with x-rays and professional hygiene cleanings to keep your smile healthy.
What is it?
A dental exam and cleaning is a comprehensive preventive appointment where our team thoroughly evaluates your oral health from every angle. We assess diagnostic x-rays to identify decay, cysts, bone loss, and root positions; screen for oral cancer across the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gum tissues; examine the gums and supporting bone for signs of periodontal disease; and inspect every tooth surface for decay using specialized instruments — all while removing the plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing simply cannot reach.
How it works?
Your appointment begins with a professional hygiene cleaning, where all tooth surfaces are carefully scaled and polished. Our dentist then performs a thorough exam that includes reviewing diagnostic x-rays, conducting an oral cancer screening, assessing gum health and bone levels, and inspecting restorations such as fillings and crowns for wear or failure. At Core Smiles, we also use Diagnodent — an advanced laser fluorescence device — to accurately detect cavities even in their earliest stages, before they are visible to the naked eye. Additionally, we perform wellness scans using digital impressions that capture tooth fractures, wear patterns, and any potential need for orthodontic treatment.
How it helps?
Regular exams and cleanings are the foundation of long-term oral health. By catching decay early with Diagnodent, identifying gum disease before it progresses, screening for oral cancer at every visit, and monitoring existing restorations and bite changes over time, we prevent small concerns from becoming large, costly problems — keeping your smile healthy, functional, and looking its best.

Understanding Your Treatment Starts Here
Who might consider this treatment?
Whether you're due for a routine checkup or it's been a while since your last visit, regular exams and cleanings are the foundation of a healthy smile for patients of all ages.
What is the typical experience?
Your hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar buildup, polish your teeth, and review your home care routine. The dentist will then evaluate your diagnostic x-rays, perform an oral cancer screening of the face, neck, lips, tongue, and throat, assess your gums and bone for signs of periodontal disease, and inspect all tooth surfaces for decay using Diagnodent laser detection technology. Existing restorations are reviewed, and digital wellness scans are taken to capture any fractures, wear, or orthodontic concerns — all discussed with you in a friendly, no-pressure way.
How long does it usually take?
Most routine exam and cleaning appointments take between 60 and 90 minutes. If it has been longer since your last visit, a little extra time may be needed for a more thorough cleaning.
Is there anything to keep in mind?
We don't take a one-size-fits-all approach to dental visits. The frequency of your exams and cleanings is tailored to your specific needs — some patients benefit from visits every three months, while others may only need to come in every six. We also monitor your bite and tooth wear over time through wellness scans, so any changes are caught early and addressed before they require more involved treatment.
What should I know about recovery after?
There's no recovery needed after a routine cleaning. Your teeth may feel extra smooth and fresh, and some patients experience mild sensitivity for a day or two — this is completely normal and resolves quickly.
