Photobiomodulation Therapy

Low-level laser therapy that accelerates healing, reduces inflammation, and relieves pain using targeted light energy.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), uses specific wavelengths of light energy to stimulate cellular repair and regeneration in oral tissues. It is a non-invasive, painless treatment used to support healing, reduce inflammation, and provide relief from pain associated with a variety of dental conditions and procedures.

A specialized laser or LED device delivers precise wavelengths of light to the targeted tissue. This light energy is absorbed by cells, stimulating mitochondrial activity and accelerating the body's natural healing processes — reducing inflammation, promoting tissue repair, and providing pain relief without heat or discomfort.

Photobiomodulation therapy helps patients heal faster and more comfortably after dental procedures, reduces post-operative swelling and soreness, and provides relief from conditions such as oral ulcers, TMJ discomfort, and soft tissue irritation. It is a gentle, drug-free complement to a wide range of dental treatments.

Understanding Your Treatment Starts Here

Who might consider this treatment?

Photobiomodulation therapy is beneficial for patients recovering from oral surgery, experiencing post-procedure discomfort, dealing with recurring oral ulcers, or managing TMJ-related pain and inflammation. It is also used proactively to support healing and reduce downtime following a variety of dental treatments.

What is the typical experience?

The treatment is completely painless and requires no anesthesia. A handheld laser or LED device is gently applied to the treatment area for a few minutes. Most patients feel nothing more than a mild warmth, if anything at all, and find the experience very comfortable and relaxing.

How long does it usually take?

Each photobiomodulation session typically takes just 5 to 15 minutes depending on the area being treated and the nature of the condition. It is often performed as an add-on to other dental appointments, making it a quick and convenient addition to your care.

Is there anything to keep in mind?

Photobiomodulation is a safe, well-researched therapy with an excellent safety profile. Protective eyewear is worn during treatment. It is not a standalone cure but works best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

What should I know about recovery after?

There is no recovery period following photobiomodulation therapy. Patients can return to all normal activities immediately after their session. Many notice reduced discomfort and improved healing within the first 24 to 48 hours following treatment.
